Peaceful Coexistence Among Couples

Updated: Feb 9, 2020

There is no relationship without its own share of challenges or struggles.

A shouting match by my neighbours woke me up only to realise that it was just one in the morning. I had barely slept for three hours after a twelve hour shift. "You are a devil",the husband screamed at the top of his voice while the wife equally responded ", "You are a killer". Oh my God, I muttered to myself as I prayed that I find another accommodation before my tenancy ends in a few months. I had barely lived for two months in the lovely neighbourhood that these quarrelsome neighbour bought the house next to mine after the owner passed away.In the six months that they have lived in the neighbourhood, they have become the talk of everyone because of the regular visits of law enforcement agents and social workers.Everyone seem fed up and the community association appears helpless. This is just one instance of how bad things can go between two people who one confessed to love and cherish one another. Nobody enjoys a quarrelsome relationship but does that mean that it must be crisis free?Definitely NO. A troublesome relationship with a spouse, friend, neighbour or colleague is not really ideal and nobody enjoys such. Everyone desires peace in all its ramifications especially with individuals who share common goals, dreams or destiny. However it is not uncommon to hear of statements such as "since we got married or since a particular event occurred ,peace has eluded the family or the midst of such friendships or marriages". Romans 12:18 says "If possible as far as it depends on you live at peace with everyone". The onus of living at peace with our spouses, friends, neighbours or colleagues lies on us as Christians. It is as far as it depends on us not on the other party. You have a choice to be at peace with your spouse or see her as quarrelsome. Heb 12:14 says " Follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the lord".It is individual responsibility to follow peace with all men especially our spouse. Don't blame your spouse as been too quarrelsome but rather choose to follow peace with him or her. This is achievable through growing intimacy with Christ who is the prince of peace .By being intimate with Christ it is possible to be at peace with your spouse.
