Let’s face it, no spouse is immune to stress and one of the best way for anyone to cope is with a good laugh.
Laughter Is Good Medicine
Psalm 33:21 – “for our heart shall rejoice in him because we have trusted in his holy name.”
If marriage is devoid of laughter and all that is left is arguments, serious conversation and problem solving , devoid of the fun of togetherness for most of the time, then there is a problem.
It may be a symptom of stress in the relationship and is also common when couples are growing apart and have no common interest that provoke laughter. (Refer to our article on growing apart). It always precedes marriage brake down. Before most marriages end, the couples would cease to be friends of each other .📷
Tips to help
1 Have you forgiven past hurts or harbouring bitterness as a result of past misadventure/ decision/action of your spouse?
2 Is there financial difficulty?
3Is one feeling left unsupported by the other?
4 Is there stress from other areas of life. eg Job or domestic issues
5Is there need to seek help with regard to Mental Health Issues?. Depression can result in lost of interest in usual hobbies. It could crept in to relationship without both being aware. It steals laughter away from sufferer and cause misinterpretation of good intention often result in unnecessary argument
6 Do you need to pray for your relationship for the “wine” to return to your marriage.?
7Have you applied the word of God into the identified problem?
8 May be both need to talk to a Christian counsellor.
So, lighten up. Learning to laugh a little more just may save your life, not to mention your marriage. To paraphrase Henry Ward Beecher, “A marriage without a sense of humour is like a wagon without springs- jolted by every pebble in the road”
